I tend to agree with you, and I usually use this pattern for, as you mentioned, large components or rarely-used ones.

However I’ve found that usually, Javascript is so slow to parse and compile that even with the smallest KB win is worth the network request!

Having said all that, I’d measure the impact of both strategies and then choose the best one.
